Glossary of Storage Terms

General

 

Bay:

The bay is the unit of adjustable shelving and may be either single or double sided.

Single sided bay:

Consists of a number of adjustable shelves supported by frames or posts, the whole being ac­cessible from the front face only.

Double sided bay:

In effect two single sided bays joined back-to-back. The assembly thus provides two sets of shelving each of which is accessible from its front face.

Note:

Double sided bays are usually of the same heights and widths as single sided bays, but the depth may be any combination of the depths given for single sided bays.

Runs:

Consist of a number of bays joined end to end and may be either single or double sided.

Compartment:

The space between any two adjacent shelves in the same bay and is the full width of the bay.

Pigeon holes:

The spaces resulting from the subdivision of a compartment by the insertion of vertical shelf dividers.

Bin:

A compartment or pigeonhole that is fitted with a bin front (retaining lip).

Single sided bays

 

Initial/Starter bay:

An initial/starter bay consists of two frames or four posts supporting the required number of shelves which are adjustable.

Extension bay:

Generally as the initial/starter bay but requiring only one frame or two posts.

Open bay type:

Frames or sides are braced and backs are open.

Closed type bay:

Frames or sides are clad and backs clad with sectional steel cladding.

Double sided bays

 

Open type bay:

Two, single sided open bays which are linked back to back to form the double-sided bay.

Closed type bay:

Frames or sides are clad and backs clad with sectional steel cladding.Sectional backs shall be common to the two linked closed type bays.

Shelving formats

 

Single-tier shelving:

A number of single and / or double sided bays standing on a horizontal surface and accessed by a pedestrian standing on that surface or a set of low-level steps or kik-steps.

Multi-tier shelving:

A number of single and / or double sided bays standing on a horizontal surface. Walkways would be supported off the front face of the shelving bays. Each level is accessed by a pedestrian standing on that surface.

Mobile shelving:

A number of single and / or double sided bays mounted onto a base that runs on tracks on the floor minimising the number of aisles required to one and maximising available space.

High-bay shelving:

A number of single and / or double sided bays standing on a horizontal surface and accessed by a pedestrian order picker or mobile steps.

Oversailing Floor:

Also known as a rack-supported floor. A number of single and / or double sided bays standing on a horizontal surface and acting as the support structure for a floor. Accessible at the lower, shelving level by a pedestrian standing on that surface or a set of low-level steps or kik-steps and at the upper level by one or more structural staircases.

Mezzanine Floor: A free-standing structural floor supported by hollow section legs. Accessible at the upper level one or more structural staircases.
