museum applications
The importance of keeping and maintaining historical artefacts cannot be underestimated. We believe in the importance of ‘Storing the Past, Into the Future’ which is why we put a great emphasis on developing storage solutions to store such valuable and irreplaceable artefacts.

In the majority of cases, a mobile shelving system is the preferred format; providing maximum storage capacity within what can be very confined spaces. Some museums and repositories for instance, are fortunate enough to occupy purpose built facilities whilst other Metalrax clients’ are restricted by old buildings which were not initially constructed for storing historical material. Metalrax is able to provide cost effective storage solutions to meet the needs of all of our clients.

The two main criteria for considering a mobile shelving solution are maximising the available floor area or compacting the storage system into a restricted space. Compared to static shelving, Metalrax Mobile Shelving can increase capacity by up to 100% or alternatively save up to 45% of the floor space occupied by the equivalent quantity of static shelving bays. Storage units, mounted onto mobile bases are propelled along fixed tracks to open up access gangways. A triple spoked hand-wheel is connected through a simple geared sprocket to the drive shaft, which requires a minimum of effort to move a fully loaded mobile shelving base.

A typical project will start with a full audit of the existing collections, which might be housed at several addresses, before a draft submission is presented. After consultation with all relevant parties has been completed, a final proposal is submitted for approval and ultimately, acceptance. A close working relationship with the client will ensure that the final recommendation will be the right working solution.
As an ISO 9001 accredited company and a founder member of the Storage Equipment Manufacturers Association (S.E.M.A.) Metalrax promote and adhere to the design standards set out in the Association's Interim Code of Practice for low-rise and high-rise static steel shelving and mobile shelving.
