Meet the Team - Gary Roberts - Regional Project Manager

Gary has been in the storage industry almost from the day he left school, over 32 years ago, working for Metalrax for the last 23 years. He started with Metalrax as an estimator and worked his way through the various positions including senior estimator and sales office manager before becoming a project sales manager around 8 years ago. He has been involved in numerous major projects and his experience in the racking market has helped with new product development and design issues at Metalrax Storage.

Gary Roberts, it’s a pleasure to chat with you and thank you for giving up your valuable time. We’d like to learn more about you so let’s get the ball rolling!

What was the last meal you cooked?

  • I always cook for the family on Mondays to give the wife a break, usually I choose something we would not normally have – with a wide range of results (occasionally either having to order a take away or eat out) but generally they enjoy what I prepare for them.

What was the last restaurant you visited?

  • We recently visited COSMO – in Bentley Bridge, Willenhall – they had so many dishes to choose from over 130 – well I took it as a personal challenge to try them all but failed – Can’t wait to have another try.

You work long hours and most weekends are taken up with your work supporting your local church, so holidays must be very important? What was your last holiday destination?

  • We went on a family holiday to Bulgaria this year, the weather was great, people so friendly, food in the hotel was excellent, and I could not believe the prices

It sounds like a great location – and good prices are always a bonus – especially to a salesman?

  • Indeed! Actually I came back with money – despite having wife and 3 girls who decided they didn’t need to take any spending money. I am glad that we visited Bulgaria and I would heartily recommend it.

So you visited COSMO recently, is that your favourite place to eat out?

  • Actually I have a few favourites, but if you put me on the spot I would have to choose one above all the others. I love a small Indian restaurant called The Shalimar in West Bromwich – I have eaten there for over 30 years and I cant recall us ever having less than excellent service and wonderful meals. Good prices – you can see a pattern forming cant you! – cement the Shalimar as my very favourite.

So you are a man who enjoys the good life?

  •  Haha, yes! As you may know or, in fact, anyone who knows me will confirm,  I eat anything – I do try to diet but fail as I love to enjoy life to the full. I love a good meal out especially surrounded by my family. However, I rarely drink as I drive almost every day – but I do enjoy a good whisky from time to time.

So how do you relax?

  • I can’t say that I really do relax as beyond my paid job I have a lot of involvement with my local church, which has recently gone through a huge restoration project. That said, music is a great source of enjoyment, and although not what you would call relaxing, I have always liked Meatloaf – we used to frequent a local pub in my youth and the only thing on the jukebox was heavy metal or Meatloaf (That choice wasn’t hard!) I don’t really have a favourite Film/TV Show and rarely watch any TV – the wife and children claim the TV remote long before I see it.

You wear a suit to work every day – how do you dress in your free time – are you formal or casual?

  • I like Black – some people say it makes you look slim – but I can disprove that. People in the office seem to think I wear a day- glow mankini – but only Mrs R knows the secret!

Are you a sporting man, Gary?

  • I enjoy all sport, and used to play football, squash, golf, cricket until I met the wife – now I am reduced to pub games like darts, pool and crib.

Ah yes – you have a reputation as a card player!

  • I have a passion for poker and regularly play at the local casino. Having won several tournaments and finish on the final table most weeks – colleagues are reluctant to have a game – I can’t imagine why.

Gary as always it’s been a pleasure to speak with you – but finally if you could invite three people to a meal – living or dead – with whom would you most like to dine?

  • I would like to dine with Pope Jean Paul II, Thomas Aquinas and John Henry Newman just to get all their feelings about the state of the church today and what they would say to try and unify the various splits in the modern church.

Gary Roberts, Thank you very much!

  • My pleasure!
