The Essex Record Office- Chelmsford

Client contacts:

Hugh Edgar - Consultant Architect.
Richard Harris - Assistant County Archivist.
Keith Mean - Project Architect.

When Essex County Council decided to build a new Record Office to replace their existing facilities, one of their first ports of call was Metalrax who have already designed and installed a number of County Record projects, including Powys Record Office, Lincolnshire Archives and the Office of Population, Census and Surveys.

The first stage was to carry out a survey of existing facilities. Metalrax personnel spent several days compiling an accurate picture of the Record Office’s current holdings. This involved recording details of over 6000 locations!

With accruals the specification called for over 1760 cubic metres of storage capacity.

Using the latest CAD technology, the Metalrax project team was able to recommend the most economical and space efficient solution which involved over 50 different bay elevations.

Metalrax worked closely with Consultant Architect - Hugh Edgar- to ensure that the new Record Office would comply with British Standard BS5454. This involved incorporating a number of special features, some of which were purpose designed by the Metalrax Technical Department.
As part of the ‘Complete Package’, the Metalrax project team sourced some specialist items including one from the U.S.A.

The new Record Office provides over 6 linear miles of shelving.
