The Surrey History Centre collects and rescues archives and printed materials relating to Surrey’s past and present.

The Challenge.

The brief was to consolidate a number of sites into one purpose built building in Woking.

A detailed inventory was carried out by metalraxstorage and submitted, which then formed the basis for the project specification.

A Metalrax Storage project team was formed to handle the project from the design stage to final commissioning.

The Solution.

By using the latest CAD technology, a number of different schemes could be assessed in order to find the most economical and space efficient solution.

This resulted in a layout which comprised 20 different bay elevations mounted on to mobile bases, in some cases over 11.5 metres long, providing over 1300 cubic metres of usable capacity.

During the consultation period, the Metalrax Storage Technical Department in conjunction with the client, established that some items would need specially designed units. As a result Metalrax Storage incorporated 3 different types of map storage units, special pull out reference shelves within the mobile shelving bays and a unique box/book support bracket to comply with BS5454.

Since the client preferred a ‘Turnkey Package’, Metalrax Storage were also commissioned to advise on and supply the index and reference system along with specially designed access equipment.
