The Client.
Southmead Hospital is a part of North Bristol NHS Trust, the largest teaching Trust in the South west.
The Challenge.
The Medical Records Department of Southmead Hospital in Bristol was faced with two problems familiar to all Records Officers and Archivists. They had outgrown their existing storage capacity and records were housed in a number of separate
buildings.
The logical solution was to centralise all their medical records at a single location and ideally within the main Medical Complex.
The only suitable building on the site was the redundant refectory and kitchens. The area was completely refurbished including laying a new concrete floor with inset tracks ready to accept mobile shelving.
The Solution.
Metalrax Storage worked closely with Medical Records Officer, Mary Carradine and Architect, Tony Harwood to create a layout to maximise the number of records stored yet maintain easy access for staff to facilitate effective filing and retrieval of documents.
The storage system chosen to meet the client’s design brief was Metalrax Storage Mobile Shelving which comprised Metaclip Shelving mounted onto mobile bases. A feature of the Metaclip shelving system is the ‘Rolled’ front edge to the upright frames which not only ensures safety in use but also presents a neat appearance which adds to the functional environment that we expect from a modern Record Management Department.
The final layout provided over three miles of shelving which represented an increase in storage capacity of 40%.
